Beneath the Cross of Jesus

While visiting my parents in Fort Wayne today, I had the wonderful privilege of attending a Good Friday service with them at noon. The first song we sang was "Beneath the Cross of Jesus" written by Elizabeth Clephane in 1872 and music by Frederick C. Maker. The following words to this beautiful song are so very powerful, especially today!

"Beneath the cross of Jesus I fain would take my stand,
The shadow of a mighty rock within a weary land;
A home within the wilderness, a rest upon the way,
From the burning of the noontide heat, and the burden of the day."

"Upon that cross of Jesus mine eyes at times can see
The very dying form of One Who suffered there for me;
And from my stricken heart, with tears, two wonders I confess:
The wonders of redeeming love and my unworthiness."

"I take, O cross, thy shadow for my abiding place;
I ask no other other sunshine than the sunshine of His face;
Content to let the world go by, to know no gain nor loss,
My sinful self my only shame, my glory all the cross."

Dear Friend, take a few moments today to reflect on the importance of the cross. For without the cross, we would not have victory over sin today. Do you truly know Him? Are you living your life for a Savior who loves you so very much? Easter weekend is a wonderful time to come before the throne of mercy and grace, and to invite Jesus to be the Lord and Master of your life.
